The Webb Junior High's vision is to develop their identity as young Muslim men and women through intellectual, spiritual, and fun activities. Having confidence in themselves as American Muslims will then help them play an important part in our greater American community. American Muslim teenagers, ages 11-13, will learn from adults and from each other how we can understand and apply our faith using our beloved Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) as a model. Adult facilitators are either professional educators or energized activists.
The Webb Junior High Seerah and Service Sessions will be a combination of classes and service projects held on Sundays beginning September 11 through May 20 during the fall and spring semesters.
Classes will fall on the first, third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of the Month. Total number of class days: 23
Fall Semester Class Dates: September 18, September 25, October 2, October 16, October 23, October 30, November 20, December 4 (conferences & classes), December 18
Spring Semester Class Dates: January 15, January 22, January 29, February 5, February 12*, February 26, March 4, March 18, March 25, April 1, April 15, April 22, April 29, May 6 (conferences & classes), May 20 (summer kick-off picnic)
December 4 and May 6 are diagnostic teacher/parent/student conferences.
PERIOD 1
9:45a.m.– 10:45a.m. The focus of period one is to deepen our understanding of Quran.
- Quranic Ibadah: Students will be placed in groups that will increase their knowledge and understanding of Quran. Our goal is for students to have the last 20+ Surahs memorized and understood as they complete the program.
PERIOD 2
11:45a.m.-12:45p.m. The focus of this period is to deepen their understanding of our American Muslim Identity. We will do this through classes that will allow students to critically analyze text and engage in thought provoking discussion.
- Seerah I (6th grade): This class will begin the story of the prophet with pre-Arabian culture through to prophethood. Connections will be made to the prophet's life and our lives today as pre-teenagers.
- Islamic Literacy/Discussion (7th grade): Discussion will be based on journal articles, youtube videos, and movie clips. Discussion will focus on major issues facing American Youth and how we can use our Islamic faith and our prophet as a guide in order to navigate through these situations successfully.
PERIOD 3
12:45p.m. – 1:45p.m. The focus of this period is to deepen their understanding of our American Muslim Identity. These classes will allow students, as American Muslims, to reflect upon and critically analyze their life and the world around them.
- Islamic Literacy/Discussion (6th grade)
iscussion will be based on journal articles, youtube videos, and movie clips. Discussion will focus on major issues facing American Youth and how we can use our Islamic faith and our prophet as a guide in order to navigate through these situations successfully. - Seerah II (7th grade): This class will focus on the prophethood from Mecca to the death of the Prophet. Connections will be made to the prophet's life and our lives today.
We will wrap up our day with Dhuhr prayer at 1:45p.m.
*Fitness day for girls/women on first Sunday of month and for boys/men on third Sunday of month from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
As youth, to put our faith into action, we will follow the Prophet's model of serving our community. Service Project Days will be held on-site. Service Project Days are always on the 2nd Sundays of the month. Total number of service days: 10
Service options are provided each year. Students will rotate through the different projects during their two years at the Webb Junior High level. One service date per month at service location.
Goal: Students will build relationships based on respect and service with our greater American and Muslim community.
Fall Semester Service Dates: September 11(Commemoration), October 9, November 13 (IMAN Eid Intra-faith), November 27 (Interfaith Thanksgiving Potluck), December 11
Spring Semester Service Dates: January 8, February 19*, March 11, April 8, May 13 (Y-ME Breast Cancer Walk)
SERVICE PROJECT OPTIONS: Students will choose their service project the first day of class on September 18.
Service Project I: Elder Care Initiatives- Students will work with a local senior center to develop a deeper understanding of our responsibilities to the elderly in our community. Students will also learn about the Islamic view point of living and interacting with elders. Maximum of 20 students
Service Project II: Chicagoland Masjid Visits-Students will visit six different Muslim Centers throughout Chicagland. Students will learn about architecture, cultures, and the history of the Chicagoland American-Muslim community. Maximum of 20 students
