Week of February 12th

Dear Parents,

This week the your children made their own book entitled "Madina, The
City of Light". There were 5 specific points that they wrote in the
books and drew coordinating pictures for.
1.) The original name of Madina was Yathrib.
2.) Madina is the second holiest City to Muslims.
3.) Early Muslims moved to Madina because it was safer than Mecca.
4.) The Prophets mosque is called Al-Masjid An-Nabawi.
5.) The city is also called Al-Madina Al-Munawwarah.
We talked about how the Prophet is buried there along with Omar and
Abu-Bakr. And also Al Baqea. The students were very creative with
their pictures. They were bright and beautiful:)

Please don't forget that service will be this Sunday. Please have
your child visit someone in the hospital, visit an elder at their home
or simply help someone with some chores. Take a photo, print it and
have them write on the sheet of paper who they visited and why. Have
a great 2 weeks and we will see you on the 26th. Please don't forget
to bring a shoebox for the diorama that we plan on making.

Love and salams,
Terri and Joy

Week of January 29th

Dear Webb Parents,

We had a great time in class this week.  We discussed the Prophet and Sahaba.  We focused on Omar, Othman, Ali and Abu-Bakr.  We then made a paper doll chain and placed Prophet Muhammed (SAW) in the middle with two of his Sahaba (RAA) on each side.  The kids got a kick out of how the men were connected once they opened them up.  They also learned that there were many other Sahaba and that some were even women.

There is homework.  Some of the children got it done in class and some did not.   The answers to the match up are that they are right across from each other.  If they want homework but got it finished in class, feel free to have them cut the sentence fragments out and paste them on a piece of construction paper.

By the way, in a few weeks we will be creating a diorama of the Dome of the Rock.  Please save a regular sized shoe box.  (without a lid is fine) They will need them for the Feb. 26th class.  If you are afraid you will forget them, please send them ahead of time with their names on the bottom and we will keep them until class.

Inshallah you have a great week!

Salams,

Terri and Joy

Week of January 22nd

Asalamualaikum Parents,

Welcome to the Spring 2012 semester for Webb Kids!! It seems as though everyone had a wonderful winter break and the children are ready to get back to their studies.

As you all know we have moved to our new location at Downers Grove South High School and I am proud to say that the transition has gone extremely well. The children love their classrooms and we are settling
in nicely.

In Sunday’s class we studied our chapter entitled The Prophet’s (SWS) Family. We talked about the Prophet’s (SWS) wives and his children andhow much he loved them all. We also asked the children to complete a family tree that showed the relationships between the Prophet (SWS), his wives and his children. It was a fun project and we saw a wide variety of artistic ability and imagination. Next week’s lesson is
entitled The Sahabah: The Friends of the Prophet (SWS). We plan to talk about those who were closest to him including Umar the Brave, Abu Bakr the Truthful and Usman Ali Zaid.

The children have enjoyed learning about the Prophet (SWS) and sharing their art projects with the class. Please take some time each week to talk to them about their lessons and ask them about what they’ve
learned.

Inshallah we will see you on Sunday, January 29th at 9:45am.

Have a wonderful week!!

WEEK 3 LITTLE  TIGERS

Assalamualaikum Parents,

This week our lesson was entitled The Five Pillars of Islam. We read from our class book about each of the five pillars and the children learn the Arabic and English words for each one. To my delight they knew most of them so we only had to fill in a few blanks, MashAllah. For our craft we used construction paper and toilet paper tubes with the name of each pillar. By the end of class there was no time to decorate the tubes but I encouraged them to finish them at home and use them as decoration in their rooms. Our next lesson will be Prayer on Sunday, October 16th.

Please note that this Sunday, October 9th is our Service Day. As part of the Webb Kids' Program your children are required to participate by doing a good deed for a family or neighbor. Some of the activities may include cleaning, visiting with a sick person, playing a game w/ an aunt or grandmother, etc. Also, we ask that you take a picture of your child doing this activity and return it to school with them on October 16th. Paste the picture on to a piece of paper where the child has written (or you for them) why this was important and/or what they did.  Like homework this is also mandatory for all members of the Webb Program.

As I mentioned in one of my first previous messages we will occasionally assign homework for the children and it is imperative that they complete it and return it to class the following week. Not only does it reinforce the lesson that we learned for the week, they also learn to be accountable for their knowledge of Islamic Studies. Please make sure that you are checking their folders each week.  As we begin this year I would like to ask for your sincere commitment to make sure that your children stay on task and complete all of the necessary assignments. This will ensure that we have a successful school year.

Lastly, Inshallah we are planning to have a book fair at the Marriott Hotel on Sunday, October 16th. There will be a variety of books to choose from and we ask that you support the effort by purchasing books for your children and friends. Not only are the books amazing but part of the proceeds go to the Webb Foundation.  To see what will be on display please visit www.shirinsbooks.com.  Orders will be taken and books will reach you very quickly.  Definitely in time for Eid!  Please plan to arrive early so that you have time to see the books and make any purchases.

Have a great week and Inshallah we will see you again on Sunday, October 16th at 9:45 am.

Salams,
Terri

WEEK 2 LITTLE TIGERS

Assalamualaikum Parents,

This week the title of our lesson was "Allah, our Great Creator." We began
class with our "We are Muslims songs" as usual. We read a selection from
our class text that highlighted all of the magnificent creations of Allah.
There were beautiful pictures of mountains, flowers, stars and trees and the
children used these images in their craft. I asked them to draw a picture to
recreate their version of Allah's most amazing creations. As always they
were very innovative and resourceful. I believe they enjoyed the project and
they were very proud of themselves. There were 2 worksheets that I handed
out. One we did in class and one was for homework. Please have them return
that the homework in their folders. The homework log is simply for class
communication to home. If there is something that is highlighted or
circled, then that is showing there is homework. Once the child completes
the homework, please sign it at the bottom and send it back in the folder.

InshaAllah, this week our lesson will be The Five Pillars of Islam.* For
this project we will need several empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls.
Please send them with your child on Sunday that would be great. Each child
will use 5 toilet paper rolls and one paper towel roll (optional). Please
send whatever you can. We will have a few extras but not enough to cover
the entire class.

Thank you,
Terri

WEEK 1

Assalamualaikum Parents,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year for the Webb Foundation Sunday School. I am so excited to be back this year. I hope that you all had a wonderful, relaxing and fun summer.

Over the last several months we have been planning a wonderful list of lessons for the students of KG and 1st grade and I am excited to get started. Last week we started our day by singing a number of Islamic songs that the children thoroughly enjoyed. It was really nice to hear that most of them knew the songs. We even added some movements and sign language which really made them smile.  After that we went to our classrooms introduced ourselves and met all of our new friends. I asked the children to tell me something interesting about themselves and I can only say that there were a variety of adorable answers that involved summer vacations, brothers and sisters and favority hobbies:) During our second and third periods we read a story about Ramadan and we shared stories of how we spent Eid with our families this year. We also created Ramadan Good Deed Chains that were decorated with words that the children associated with Ramadan. Some of the words they chose were Giving, Charity, Eid, Party, Gifts, Suhoor, Iftar and several others. They had a wonderful time with this project and many of them turned their chains into exotic formations that were quite impressive.

Inshallah, next week the title of our lesson will be "Allah Our Great Creator".  We will read a story about all of the wonderful blessings in our lives and how Allah created us and the world.  In preparation for next week's class I would like to ask that you all send in a kleenex or tissue box with your children.

Thank you again for choosing to participate in the Webb Kids Program. I look forward to a productive and fun school year.

Wasalam,

Joy Turner
